Don’t hang him. Just take it off

Image
This post is a response to Indispire#23 which is... Treat Juvenile Rapist as an Adult and Punish Him and If proven they should be Hanged. #HangTheRapis Here's my take... There are no degrees of rapists. They are just that.  If they know how to dominate, subdue and have sex with a woman, by force, without her consent, they are criminals no matter what their age. A rapist has no value for life, his or hers.  But he certainly values his domination and masculinity.  So it's simply apt to take away from him what he values and misuses the most. Isn't it?  Take away the tool which is causing the crime and let him feel the shame and pain for the rest of his life.  Somewhere in the world, his victim still living with her dignity shattered and lifelong trauma and distrust of mankind. Putting her perpetrator’s life out is hardly going to serve the purpose. Therefore, I would never advocate hanging for rape. It should be castration. Rest assured, he is

If you like it, go for it

Last year, I did something which I wish I had done many years ago. I did LASIK surgery on my eyes and for the first time in 25 years, I actually could see without my glasses. Oh those hideous, ugly glasses…only a person wearing them will know the disadvantages of living with this horrible accessory. I have lived through the phase of hard lenses, semi soft lenses and even the change everyday super soft ones. But trust me, nothing compares to seeing with your own eyes. I am in my mid thirties and one doctor tried to discourage me saying that it was too late. I would in any case, get reading glasses in the next five years, so I should not waste money for these five-six years. So then I did what was best for me. I went to another doctor. I’d avoided the eye surgery for the past ten years but now, I was so sick and tired of glasses and lenses that even if it was for a year, I wanted to experience being glass-free…something which I hadn’t been since I was in the sixth stand

A Private Affair

Image
A B.E.S.T. bus droned along noisily, and made its way through the labyrinth of cars, taxis, beggars and noxious fumes. The young man was good looking and in his mid-twenties. He sat in the fifth row behind the driver. Dressed in an impeccably crisp shirt and pants a pair of smart sun glasses only enhanced his profile. There was much to look outside the bus and observe…but he could not take his eyes off the woman who was sitting a few seats in front of him. Diagonally opposite to him, she sat in the seat which was reserved for women only. Image Courtesy The woman opened a small pouch and took out a small, ornate mirror. Taking a tissue she dabbed her face, and as she did so, she precariously turned her mirror towards the man. Her face relaxed and she smiled as she realized that he was sitting at his usual place. Their unspoken conversation began through the mirror. At first, she dabbed her face with compact powder and then gingerly, as and when the bus made its fir

Lory Birds from the Southern Hemisphere

Image
These gorgeous birds called Lory or Lorikeets are cousins of parrots and parakeets. These birds are found mostly in the Southern Hemisphere.   These two birds were eating from the same cup, without fighting for food. In fact, it was really amusing to see them taking turns to eat their food. Something which some people can learn from them. You just need to call them and they will hop on your arm and feed from your hands, hop on your shoulders and generally, just make you feel very special among them.    They are not afraid of close contact with human beings...of course, after they are well fed. Finally, we spotted the elusive, solitary, majestic white parakeet with it's crown. The king of the parrot kingdom.  Location: Jurong Bird Park, Singapore.

Posing Baby penguins @ Penguin Coast, Jurong Bird Park

Image
There's an area in the Jurong Bird Park, Singapore, which is called the Penguin Coast. It houses these gorgeous Jackass Penguins...yeah, they are actually called that. When were stood around to take their pictures, they actually came out of the water and posed for a perfect picture. As soon as we were done, they all jumped back into the water...  Gorgeous creatures...ain't they?

Ek boond...by Ayodhyay Singh Upadhyay

Image
A wonderful poem in Hindi written by legendary poet, Ayodhya Singh Upadhyay, I found it in my daughter's Hindi Text book. । Image courtesy: www.clipartbest.com

A fragrance called Singapore

Image
When you travel to some place, what do you remember the most? The sights...the sounds...the people...and the smells...Ahh! Yes. The smells of a place...those are what transport you back there in an instant. All you need to do is take a deep breath and close your eyes. It is this experience, I narrate in this short post below...my first, most vivid memory of Singapore, and the one which remains with me to this day. As I stepped our of the aircraft, on to the tarmac of Changi Airport, Singapore, it was my sense of smell was seduced. The aer was filled with fragrance...the exact opposite of the smell we had left behind (no pun intended), at Mumbai airport. I felt like I was in God's own fragrant country. I followed the sweet, tangy, fruity fragrance and even before I could enter the country, we were in the Garden of Eden...Changi Airport's butterfly garden. Hundreds of butterflies, little splashes of rainbows, fluttering in the aer , oblivious to the several e

It won't be fair to give credit to only a few people for all that I have learnt and keep learning. So this post is dedicated to all those people, things and experiences which keep adding to my pot of learning, each and every single day.

Kotak Social Banking...because I am stupid

Image
Dear Mr. Kotak/ Mahindra, This is in regards to the latest contest put up on indiblogger.in about Kotak Mahindra Bank's new product called 'Jifi'. This is an Unreview. That is to say that this is the opposite of what you want to achieve via the indiblogging contest...i.e. a buzz. I haven't submitted this post for your contest...for obvious reasons, but may be I should, cuz you may take note. Why your product is a terrible idea? 1. Finances and Money is a very private thing. You have to agree that our incomes and finance are a very private affair. We hide our passbooks, tip toe in secret to open our bank lockers, shut our windows while we count our money and more so. Why, even  chimps hide their peanuts in tree holes so no one can see them and take them away. 2. Twitter/ Facebook/ Whatsapp are not secure. In spite of what u will claim, the fact remains that none of these websites are as secure as they may seem to be. We have heard millions of sto

Religion is a load of medieval rubbish

Image
Do we really need religions? Someone recently called me informing me that he had penned a book on religious awareness and I should promote it on my face book page. It promoted radical Hindu views and should reach out to every Hindu around the globe. Here, I must confess that I've never been very big on religion of any type. That's when it suddenly came to me that while it was on my birth certificate that I was a Hindu, did I really care what it said? I had so many friends who belonged to so many religious that promoting the supremacy of one over the other...wasn't it simply unfair? I realized then that I was quite unreligious...that's if the word actually exists. But u get the drift. I didn't actively practice Hinduism nor did I understand what it was all about. Frankly speaking it's not like I didn't try. But it always put me to sleep. Plus the one thing I realized was that most religions hadn't evolved with time. Religious fanatics

Readers make leaders

Image
This post is in response to the indispire topic 20 which is "Reading books has reduced dramatically in today's youth. Kids who read books are treated as socially incapable nerds. What is your take on this topic?" Here's my take:- Yes and no. Yes to the first statement: - Reading books has reduced dramatically in today's youth. With many other forms of information and entertainment having taken up their mind space like television/ internet etc, kids today have many methods of getting their information. So they choose the ones which suit them best. It could be books, it could be audio-visual, as long as they get their dose of Vitamin I (information). No to the second one:- Kids who read books are treated as socially incapable nerds. I think probably, you are talking about those kids who keep reading only their school books all the time, the stereotype we see in our movies. If they keep reading only study books and nothing else, they are o

"I wish to visit Kashi" The busy man often said.  He finally met the Ganga, Alas...only after he was dead.

She may wear shorts...so does that make her a slut?

Image
Having given your topic a thought, I think there are three types of people. Type 1: People who are only taught to look not think -          These are the people who are brought up to believe in stereotypes. For e.g. if you wear a saree, you have a behenji mentality…or if you wear a bikini, you are easy and slutty…or if you wear jeans to office, you take your work casually…and so on and so forth. -          They are not taught to think deeply, or look beyond the outer shell of just about anything...people, houses, situations so they take everything at face value. -          More often than not, they are a product of extreme low confidence. They are not proud of where they come from, who they are and this more often than not rubs off on their opinion of others. Type 2: Those people who blindly follow culture and traditions -          These are, more often than not, the opposite of the people above. They have a false superiority complex about themselves. -          It
